What is the VentureWell Ocean Enterprise Accelerator?

The VentureWell Ocean Enterprise Accelerator is a national program that supports early-stage ocean technology startups through mentorship, technical guidance, and a structured commercialization track. Voltic Shipping, the Boston-based company spun out of MIT's Ocean Engineering department, completed the program's Spring 2026 Stage 1 cohort. The accelerator is run in partnership with NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and is organized by VentureWell, a nonprofit that supports science and technology entrepreneurs.

The Spring 2026 Stage 1 cohort selected 15 startups nationwide working across ocean and coastal technology sectors. Participants received three months of mentorship along with an in-person workshop held at the University of Rhode Island Bay Campus. The program is part of a broader set of Ocean Enterprise Accelerators that NOAA has funded to help small businesses and entrepreneurs commercialize ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes-based technologies, according to NOAA's Integrated Ocean Observing System program.
For Voltic, the accelerator provided a structured commercialization environment. The company's core technology adds solar collection area well beyond what a ship's deck can hold, attaching to existing vessels without replacing legacy infrastructure. Voltic also holds a Lloyd's Register Approval in Principle under IMO MSC.1/Circ.1455, a separate regulatory milestone from the accelerator program.
