The IMO uses international rules and targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. According to the IMO's 2023 greenhouse gas strategy, international shipping should reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by or around 2050.
The IMO also regulates ship efficiency through MARPOL Annex VI.
