NOAA's Ocean Enterprise Accelerators, run through partner organizations, exist specifically because ocean and maritime hardware ventures tend to have longer paths to revenue than typical venture-backed software, according to NOAA's IOOS program. Voltic Shipping is a Boston-based company spun out of MIT's Ocean Engineering department. The company holds a patent for a power system that enables unlimited-range, zero-emission, fully electric retrofits of existing cargo ships. The system adds solar collection area well beyond what a ship's deck can hold, attaching to an existing vessel without replacing legacy infrastructure, which requires the kind of engineering and safety validation timeline that these programs are designed to support. Voltic completed the Spring 2026 Stage 1 cohort of the VentureWell Ocean Enterprise Accelerator, run in partnership with NOAA. The cohort selected 15 startups nationwide for three months of mentorship, including an in-person workshop at the University of Rhode Island Bay Campus in June 2026.
