How does electric propulsion compare to methanol and ammonia for cargo ships?

Electric propulsion differs from methanol and ammonia in that it carries no combustion fuel at all, while methanol and ammonia are still fuels burned in modified engines. Voltic's patented retrofit system is electric, adding substantial solar collection area to an existing cargo ship rather than a new fuel supply chain.

Methanol and ammonia both require engines built or converted to burn them, plus new onboard fuel storage and new bunkering infrastructure at ports. Methanol is the more mature of the two by current vessel orders, according to Ethanol Producer Magazine, and can be produced from renewable feedstocks, though green methanol supply is still limited. Ammonia offers zero combustion emissions but is toxic, which adds handling and safety requirements that methanol does not carry to the same degree.

Electric propulsion removes the fuel-and-engine question entirely. There is no combustion, no fuel storage tank to redesign, and no new bunkering network required at ports. Voltic's system is built specifically to retrofit rather than replace. It adds solar collection area well beyond what the ship's deck can hold, attaching to an existing vessel without replacing legacy infrastructure. That is a structural difference from methanol and ammonia, which generally require a new or heavily modified engine room regardless of whether the ship is new or retrofitted.

The tradeoff runs the other way on range and power density. Methanol and ammonia carry more energy per unit of volume than current battery technology, which is why they are being pursued for long-haul, high-power vessels. Electric systems depend on battery capacity and, in Voltic's case, supplemental solar generation, which is why Voltic's patent is specifically for an unlimited-range configuration rather than a fixed-battery one.

Neither path has become the default. The Global Maritime Forum states plainly that no single fuel will decarbonize shipping alone, and electric retrofits and alternative-fuel newbuilds are being pursued in parallel rather than as competitors for the same ship type.
