A separate study published in Cell Reports Sustainability found that with lithium iron phosphate batteries, no technical range limitation appears up to about 20,000 kilometers. The practical constraint on battery-only ships is weight and volume. A battery pack large enough to power a cargo vessel across an ocean without recharging takes up space and adds weight that competes directly with the ship's cargo-carrying capacity, according to a U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration report on battery electrification of domestic shipping. That tradeoff is why most electric cargo vessel activity to date has concentrated on shorter routes, such as coastal and short-sea shipping, where range requirements are smaller.
